The Knowledge Era and Silicon Valley

"This new world of instant information and global communication technology has overturned our thinking and overthrown the old social and economic order."

Clock Worlds and Space-Time

"Futurists suggest that profound change results when the underlying science or mythology changes."

Knowledge Transformation

"Applying knowledge to knowledge in business only really begins when we reflect on the learning and knowledge component of the work itself."

Information and Knowledge as Products

"The cost of the information technology in the average car is greater than the cost of the steel."

Quest for Knowledge

"Such questions focus around collecting and organizing codified knowledge. There is an emphasis on measurement and planning."

Knowledge and Power

"There is a powerful dynamic relationship between knowledge and power."

Knowledge about Knowledge

"Despite the explosion of knowledge and an increasing interest in knowledge management, we know relatively little about the process of organizational knowledge creation."

Knowledge Competencies

"Core competencies are those unique characteristics that enable a company to generate innovative products continually and to extend market capability."

Comparing Competencies and Capabilities

"It is important to remember in any comparative analysis that none of the companies currently in your industry including yours may be even close to where the industry is heading in the future."

Purpose as the Attractor for Knowledge

"A company's identity at any given moment in time is derived from its unique combination of competencies and capabilities."

Managing Intellectual Assets

"This renewed appreciation of intellectual assets at Dow is propelling them to consider an Intellectual Capital Supplement to their traditional corporate measures."

The Larger Knowledge Asset

"Underlying codified intellectual assets, such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks, is a whole iceberg of knowledge that floats around the organization."

Navigating Knowledge

"If our attention is on managing information, we will never move into knowledge. If we focus only on building knowledge, we will never gain real wisdom."

Tacit and Explicit Knowledge

"One of the goals of knowledge management in organizations is to make knowledge more visible."

Knowledge and Learning

"When we decide to acquire knowledge, we require learning processes to support that effort."

Building Knowledge

"We can think of our own personal knowledge as a web of knowing where many thoughts, feelings, concepts, ideas, and beliefs weave together."

The Knowledge Archetype

"Every aspect of knowledge is interdependent on the others in our universe of knowing."

Linking Knowledge, Learning, and Performance

"We can link different types of learning to the performance challenges a manager or team might face in the course of their work."

Knowledge Archetypes in Action

"Mission and value statements are basic tools for fostering cohesiveness and alignment."

Tenets of Organizational Knowledge

"No sooner do we think we have identified a pattern of knowledge than a new one seems to appear. So, if this basic component of organizational intelligence is always changing, how do we organize to support it?"

Creating Data Knowledge

"The more feelers individuals have extended to the environment, the more people actively seek feedback and appreciate variation, the more data they require."

Procedural Performance Questions

"High performing organizations have their Procedural house in order."

Functional Learning

"Companies with high level performance in the Functional mode realize productivity gains from fine tuning their business processes."

Managing Mode Performance

"Analysis in the Managing mode goes beyond just determining if something is or is not working well. It has to do with understanding all the factors that promote or impede effectiveness."

Integrative Learning

"Are people encouraged to have active exchanges with the environment by participating in professional associations, conferences, and trade shows, or by obtaining continuing outside education?"

Union Performance Questions

"Union mode performance arises from a perspective that understands that our actions do not truly serve us unless they serve all of us."

Strategies and Approaches

"Best practice companies provide a common vehicle for expanding knowledge across all domains."

Next Generation Knowledge Mapping

"We cannot solve our Knowledge Era questions with design approaches that came out of Information Age thinking."

Self-Organization and the Internet

"The Web, with many of the qualities of a self-organizing system, is one of the most interesting knowledge experiments around."

Measuring Knowledge

"The challenge in any measurement system is to be sure that what we are measuring is really an indicator for what we want to observe."
